Florida’s 2017 season didn’t get off to the best start on Saturday, as the Gators were trounced by the Michigan Wolverines 33-17 in Dallas.

Making matters worse, 10 players were suspended and the offense only managed three points, as two pick-sixes led to 14 Gator points.

After the embarrassing effort, Outkick the Coverage writer Clay Travis said he thinks Florida coach Jim McElwain is now on the hot seat and a Week 3 matchup against Tennessee could decide his fate:

“I think things could get really, really ugly for McElwain,” he writes. “The game against Tennessee on September 16th looms massive for both Butch Jones and McElwain. To me, that’s a linchpin game for both teams and for both coaches. If Tennessee were able to beat Florida for a second straight year and the Gators were 1-2 going on the road at Kentucky, the swords would be out for McElwain.

“Can anyone imagine Chip Kelly in Gainesville?”

The Chip Kelly note is interesting, as the former NFL coach and longtime Oregon coach was linked to several college jobs this past offseason.

Would he even be interested in the Florida job should McElwain get the axe? Only time will tell, but Coach Mac still has plenty of time to coach his way off of Travis’s perceived hot seat, too.
