The Florida Gators have been heavily linked to former Oregon and NFL coach Chip Kelly as they look for a replacement for Jim McElwain, but many are divided on whether Kelly would be a good fit in Gainesville.

There’s no doubting that Kelly is a bright offensive mind, but he’s been in trouble with the NCAA before and is also widely considered to be a “West Coast guy,” which means the potential opening at UCLA may be more enticing for him.

However, on “The Herd with Colin Cowherd” on Thursday, Cowherd said it’s nonsense to think Kelly couldn’t fit in down south, as you can see in the video below:

“Yes, Chip Kelly would be a great fit at Florida,” he says. “Have you watched Florida the last eight years? They can’t pick up successive first downs. The South is intense — they love their football and they love their church. … Chip Kelly is a great hire.”

Whether or not the Gators actually hire Kelly or not obviously remains to be seen, but Cowherd simply says culture fit shouldn’t be an issue in this day and age.

With how stagnant Florida’s offense has been since the Urban Meyer era, though, the Gators could do a lot worse than a bright offensive mind like Kelly’s.
