It’s hard to recall a time when more people were considering picking against a top-ranked Alabama than they have been this week leading up to the Iron Bowl. Yes, Auburn is on a decent run over the last month but the Tigers are far from a perfect team. How Nick Saban chooses to use the skepticism remains to be seen but doubting the Tide in the past has proven to be unwise.

Saban spoke during Wednesday’s SEC Coaches Teleconference. Here’s a summary of what he had to say:

  • Opening comments: I think everyone understands the importance of the Iron Bowl. A lot at stake this year due to each team’s accomplishment.
  • How often do you practice unlikely scenarios like the Kick Six? I think we have plenty of time to practice. We practice with the players. On Friday we have a walk through where we go over the special situations. We have always down that and will continue to do that.
  • What improvements have you seen from Jarrett Stidham? Their QB has played better and better as the season has gone on. He’s always had the talent but he understands the offense better. They have given him more time with their pass protection and he’s tremendous with the deep ball.
  • Anything standout at the WR position? No. 81 is a great skill player, maybe the best we’ve seen this year. No. 21 is a really good WR too, have to be aware of him.
  • Thoughts on Da’Ron Payne? Payne has been one of our most consistent players all year long. He pays attention to detail.
  • How have the last few SEC games helped you prepare for Auburn? When things are difficult, it’s important for your team and helps development. I think it’s very important. Players need to be at their best when their best is needed. We have had a few SEC games that were difficult and we were able to do what needed to be done to win the game.
  • How will Jalen Hurts handle the noise of Jordan-Hare? That’s very, very important in a game like this — especially against a defense like this. I think the more experience you have helps in those situations. Because the QB is the distributor of the ball, it’s really important for him most of all.
  • Do you have to remind your players that the SEC West is at stake this week against Auburn? Do you think there’s any player on our team that doesn’t know that? If I have to tell them about it, we have problems.
