FootballScoop updated its Monday coaching carousel news to reflect that Mississippi State has reportedly reached out to Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables.

Venables has been asked to come in and interview for the Bulldogs’ head coaching job, according to FootballScoop’s sources.

“We’ve been told Bulldogs AD John Cohen, formerly Mississippi State’s baseball coach, intends to hire a ‘ball coach’ as his new football coach,” the report said. “Pruitt and Venables are ball coaches.”

Venables has been Clemson’s defensive coordinator since 2012 and has assembled some of the best defensive units in the country. He was named the Broyles Award winner as the nation’s top assistant coach in 2016.

Speaking of defensive coordinators, Alabama’s Jeremy Pruitt was also reported to be a strong candidate for the Mississippi State head coaching vacancy.

While it’s hard to say for sure who will end up in Starkville, it appears the Bulldogs are comfortable with going after big-time coordinators.
