South Carolina OC Kurt Roper has done a good job molding young QB Jake Bentley into one of the best throwers in the SEC in his two years in Columbia.

Understandably, he’s now drawing interest from other schools that are looking to fill their open head coaching positions.

According to USA TODAY’s Dan Wolken, Roper has been connected to an opening at Rice — his alma mater — and FootballScoop.com reports that talks are getting serious:

That’s good news for Roper and Rice, but bad news for the Gamecocks, as learning a new offensive system isn’t what Bentley needs right now.

However, coaches move around all the time, so it wouldn’t be the end of the world if Roper left. If the talented coordinator can land his first head coaching job, he’d be foolish not to do it.
