As Les Miles would say, Chad Morris hired one damn fine defensive coordinator in John Chavis.

Considering Chavis has been coaching in the SEC since 1989, there’s no doubt Morris has brought on the most experienced defensive coach he could find to help him navigate the SEC landscape. That’s a thought shared by former LSU head coach Les Miles during a Thursday appearance on Sports Talk with Bo host Bo Mattingly.

During his appearance on the program, Miles noted just how improved LSU’s defense became once he hired Chavis. Before coming to LSU, Chavis had spent years on Phillip Fulmer’s Tennessee staff before UT dismissed its longtime head coach following the 2008 season. Miles also notes that you can’t find another defensive coordinator in the SEC that has won more and the value of that experience in league play.

Miles also discussed the key to having success in Chavis’ defensive system — having great corners that can play man-to-man.

“When we have great corners, John Chavis is going to play great football because he knows one thing — that guy has that guy and that guy has that guy, now you can play zone in between that,” Miles said on the show. “Those two cats that can play real live man-to-man football, they are an advantage for a guy like Chavis.”
