When you talk about LSU offensive linemen over the years, one of the greatest ever to play for the Tigers was Kevin Mawae, who went on to have an incredible 16-year NFL career.

Mawae is a member of the LSU Hall of Fame and was recently named to the New York Jets’ Ring of Honor. Now, he’ll try his hand at coaching, as it was announced he’d join Herm Edwards’ Arizona State staff on Monday.

Mawae played for Edwards for five years with the Jets, and the new ASU coach said in a statement released by the school that he’s thrilled to have the LSU legend join his staff as an offensive analyst:

“Kevin Mawae is one of the most respected voices in football,” says Edwards. “He will add a tremendous amount of credibility and knowledge to our coaching staff. I am thrilled that I get the opportunity to reunite with one of my favorite players to coach.”

Mawae said his daughter is going to swim at the university, so he’s excited to be there near her while coaching the game he loves:

“I have a lot of respect for Coach Edwards, whom I played for for five years.” says Mawae. “His character and integrity are second to none. I knew that when my playing career was finished and I wanted to enter the coaching profession that he was the type of person that I wanted to work for. My daughter, Abigail, has signed a letter of intent to swim for Coach Bob Bowman and the Sun Devil swimming program. Both she and I fell in love with the University then.”

Mawae played for the Tigers from 1989 to 1993, earning first-team All-SEC honors in 1991.
