Frank Martin led the South Carolina Gamecocks to the Final Four last year, but things didn’t go so well in Columbia this year.

Now, he is apparently being contacted about a big-time opening at an American Athletic Conference school.

According to the New Haven Register, UConn has reached out to Martin about the job left vacant after the Huskies fired Kevin Ollie:

Danny Hurley, Frank Martin, Tom Crean and Thad Matta are coaches that athletic director David Benedict is believed to have targeted. According to multiple sources, Martin, currently the head coach at the University of South Carolina, has been in contact with UConn. A fiery personality in the Jim Calhoun mode, he is signed through 2022 but is said to be somewhat dismayed that South Carolina hasn’t made more of an investment into the basketball program after last year’s surprise run to the Final Four.

That’s an interesting note about Martin being upset that South Carolina hasn’t invested more into the basketball program, and it’s one that could potentially cost the Gamecocks their talented coach.

Obviously, other candidates are talking with UConn, too, but Martin has the credentials to be an interesting hire for the Huskies, who have won four titles since 1999.
