Matt Luke managed to salvage his first recruiting class at Ole Miss thanks to a late push that saw several top prospects either flip or simply commit to the Rebels late in the recruiting process. Without a doubt, the biggest signature landed by Luke and his staff last recruiting cycle belonged to California quarterback Matt Corral.

After enrolling early and arriving to Oxford in time to participate in his first spring practice in college, Corral is working hard to potentially unseat Jordan Ta’amu as the Rebels starter. During his first media availability this spring, which was posted to YouTube by Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal, the freshman quarterback was asked about the biggest adjustment he’s faced since arriving in Oxford.

“The only adjustment is being smart and knowing what you have to do quick because that’s all it really is at this level of football,” Corral said. “It’s making quicker decisions, way quicker than you made in high school.”

The freshman QB even acknowledged the offense Ole Miss runs is similar to what he was doing at Oaks Chrisitan in high school. Helping him make that transition easier is arguably the best receiving corp in the SEC. Corral had a smile on his face when he was asked about the level of receivers he gets to throw to in Oxford.

“It’s ridiculous. The first week I was out there, really just seven-on-seven — when the players called it, my balls were a little off because I am not used to how big they are and how fast they are,” Corral said. “That closed-quarter speed they got when the ball is in the air is something I had to adjust to. It wasn’t hard.”

Corral appears to have all the confidence in the world. Whether that’s put on display next season or not remains to be seen but the future of the quarterback position looks bright in Oxford when Ta’amu graduates this time next year.
