Former Georgia running back standout Sony Michel was drafted by the New England Patriots with the No. 31 pick overall Thursday night.
Thanks to former Tennessee running back Alvin Kamara, who made an instant splash with the New Orleans Saints, the hype for Michel continued building following his senior season. Michel compares favorably to Kamara, who’s a great runner and receiver.
Michel was Georgia’s lightning, while Nick Chubb was its thunder.
During his four-year career, Michel racked up 3,613 rushing yards and 33 rushing touchdowns, while catching 64 passes for 621 yards and six scores. Michel’s best season, however, was 2017, where he recorded 1,227 rushing yards and 16 rushing touchdowns.
The 5-foot-11, 215-pound blazer had a prolific Rose Bowl game, combining for 222 total yards and four touchdowns against Oklahoma, and that game alone has to be still lingering in NFL scouts’ minds.
Michel, from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, was rated a 5-star prospect in the class of 2014, and he was ranked as the nation’s No. 20 overall player, the No. 3 overall running back and the state of Florida’s No. 3 overall prospect, according to 247Sports Composite Rankings.
It’ll be interesting to see the impact Michel has at football’s highest level.
