Recently, college football analyst Mike Detillier joined former Tennessee WR Jayson Swain on “The Swain Event” and discussed QB Jarrett Guarantano.

During that segment, he also talked about Tennessee graduate transfer QB Keller Chryst, who came over from Stanford this offseason.

At the 9:45-mark of the interview, Detillier says Chryst is a “dink-and-dunk guy” who needs to improve on longer passing routes:

“He’s a dink-and-dunk guy,” Detillier said. “He’s a guy that likes the short, intermediate throws.

“It’s something that’s part of his game from his high school days on to Stanford. That’s what he does the best — the short work. You can understand why, having been immersed in Stanford’s offense, which is based a lot on the running game, to be honest. People talk about, you know, their pro-pass game, but what do they do the best? Bryce Love and Christian McCaffrey — they know how to run the ball, and it’s a lot to do having to do with throwing the ball out to the tight end short, and to the running backs out in the flat, and that’s what he does best. What he’s got to get better at is the intermediate part of the game — the 11-yard-and-beyond pass, and hitting that.”

Chryst and Guarantano will compete for the starting job this summer, and it sounds as if Detillier thinks Guarantano has the most upside.

However, new coach Jeremy Pruitt will go with the quarterback that gives his team the best chance to win this year, so it’ll be fun to watch the battle play out.
