Back before the 2005 season, then-LSU coach Nick Saban made the jump to the NFL, taking the job with the Miami Dolphins following a 9-3 season.

At the time, Jimbo Fisher was the Tigers’ offensive coordinator, but LSU chose to hire Les Miles away from Oklahoma State instead.

Naturally, when Miles was fired during the 2016 season, Fisher’s name resurfaced as a potential candidate for the job. However, Fisher, who was then at Florida State, seemingly was never close to taking the job that eventually went to Ed Orgeron.

During SEC Media Days on Monday, Fisher was asked about what happened with the LSU job both times he didn’t get it, but he chose not to dwell on the past. While he expressed his love for Louisiana, he didn’t go into specifics about any conversations had between him and the Tigers.

“Listen, my two boys were born in Baton Rouge,” he said. “I love Baton Rouge. My kids — that’s where they were born. They’re Louisianans. I’ve always had a great affiliation for that place and great love for that place. Unfortunately, it just didn’t work out at the time. We are where we are now, though. They have a great coach and I’m in a great situation, so we’ll move on. But I always have a great appreciation for those fans and those people there. They treated me unbelievably well.”

Fisher landed a 10-year, $75 million contract with Texas A&M this offseason, so it seems as if he won’t be in the mix for the LSU job again anytime soon.

Still, he has deep ties to the Bayou State, and even though he may never be the Tigers’ head coach, he’ll always have great memories of his time at LSU.
