There’s no telling how well college football players will take to the new schemes brought in when a coaching change occurs. While Mississippi State’s offense has not undergone a radical change from the Dan Mullen era to the start of the Joe Moorhead era, the coaching staff in Starkville had no idea how much information the team would retain from the spring once fall camp opened.

Now that they do have that information, what’s the verdict? According to offensive coordinator Luke Getsy, all signs point to a fantastic summer down in Starkville.

During his recent media availability, Getsy shared his thoughts on Nick Fitzgerald’s first week of camp and how well the offense is gelling in the new offensive system.

“It’s good to see (Fitzgerald) out there and taking a bunch of reps, that obviously helps. The play style, the tempo has all been really good so far,” Getsy said.

The Hail State coordinator was then asked about the retention from his players coming off the spring transition to the Moorhead offense. In that aspect, Getsy has been pleasantly surprised.

“The execution and the knowledge of the guys, they did a heck of a job this summer, they really did,” Getsy gushed. “I’m proud of all those guys because we really hit the ground running, we really did. In the spring, it was up and down, day-to-day but those guys did a really good job, and the strength staff did an unbelievable job getting them in shape because they are working their butts off.”

One other comment of interest from the MSU offensive coordinator came when discussing the physicality of the system. Don’t think for a second that this team has lost its gritty edge under the new coaching staff.

“The physicality of our football team will be the definition of our offense, everything starts up front, and that mentality will spill across the board — we talk about it every single day,” he said.

Of all the things Mississippi State fans are going to hear about fall camp, that’s got to rank right up there with the most comforting.
