The Tennessee Volunteers have new leadership in 2018, but Jeremy Pruitt isn’t exactly inheriting a great situation.

Exiting the Butch Jones era, the Vols are coming off of a brutal 4-8 season, and for the short term, rough waters could still be ahead. Finding and developing a quarterback will have a huge impact on this season. Pruitt is also recruiting well, but it’s going to take a couple of cycles to get talent in the program and develop those players.

How many wins does Paul Finebaum see on Tennessee’s schedule this year? Not enough to make a bowl game, he says. Finebaum joined WJOX 94.5 FM Monday morning to explain his reasoning.

“I don’t think they’re going to a bowl game,” Finebaum said. “There’s a path to six wins, but it’s complicated. And what I don’t know is what those players on campus look like that we haven’t seen much of. There’s a couple of JUCO guys and (Keller) Chryst.

“It really comes down to — I don’t think they’ll win the first game (against West Virginia), although that opinion could change. … I think it’s going to come down to their ability to beat Florida at home. Florida is a wildcard, too. It’s a winnable game, but without beating Florida at Neyland Stadium early in September, they will severely challenged to get to a bowl game.”

Three non-conference games against ETSU, UTEP and Charlotte are wins, but it may come down to how well the Vols finish the season if they’re going to make a bowl game; Kentucky, Missouri and Vanderbilt are all winnable. Tennessee also faces the toughest three-game slate in the entire conference starting in late September: at Georgia, at Auburn and Alabama. That’s brutal.

Finebaum points to the Florida game as the biggest factor, and should the Vols win that one, it’s likely they get to six wins.
