When it comes to current college football coaches, everyone is coaching for second place in the “greatest coach” argument. That’s because Alabama’s Nick Saban, with his six national championships, has to be considered No. 1.

On Tuesday, ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit was asked who he thinks is the best coach other than Saban, and he ended up naming a pair of coaches, including a former Saban assistant.

In addition to Penn State’s James Franklin, Herbie also said he’s buying stock in Georgia’s Kirby Smart (via USA TODAY):

There are two or three easy answers, but I think the guy, if you’re buying a stock, is Kirby Smart. He’s on his way. They’re about to be a force. They’re not going away. I would put him right there.

Considering Smart led Georgia to the National Championship Game in only his second year at the helm of the program, he’s definitely deserving of a mention.

Now, we just have to see what Smart and his squad are able to do in Year 3.
