Through seven weeks of the 2018 season, the LSU Tigers are an impressive 6-1, with three wins coming against teams that were ranked in the top 10 at the time.

Now, LSU has some realistic College Football Playoff aspirations, but tough tests still remain on the schedule.

On Monday, former coach (and current CBS analyst) Rick Neuheisel joined ESPNU Radio on SiriusXM and said coach Ed Orgeron is the coach of the year so far:

“Ed Orgeron is the coach of the year,” he said. “He’s the guy. … Even though LSU has won eight or more games 18 times in a row. Only one team has done that more … Boise State. … If I told you right now that LSU was going to be one of the final four teams in the country, and I know they’ve got a big game coming this weekend against Mississippi State, then a bye, then Alabama. … You know they would give you the most honest effort and come straight at you, punch you in the mouth, take punches. You know you would get a great game in one of those semifinals.”

The Tigers have a classic trap game against Mississippi State this weekend, then face Alabama after the bye week. There’s still a long way to go, but it’s hard to argue with Neuheisel at this point.
