Georgia star freshman QB Justin Fields is reportedly transferring, and he’ll be a highly coveted prospect, just like he was when he signed with Georgia.

Last recruiting cycle, Fields and Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence were the top-two quarterbacks in the country, but Lawrence won the starting job for the Tigers over Kelly Bryant, while Fields stayed on the bench behind starter Jake Fromm.

On Tuesday, former coach and current analyst Rick Neuheisel joined ESPNU Radio on SiriusXM and said that the moment that Lawrence won the starting job, he started to worry that Fields would transfer:

“As soon as Trevor Lawrence got the starting job at Clemson, I worried for Justin Fields’ tenure at Georgia,” he said. “He was the No. 1 recruit in the country and Trevor Lawrence was No. 2. … The byproduct of that decision at Clemson was that Justin Fields was going to hear it from his inner circle, ‘Why aren’t you getting to play?’ As the season went on, we kept waiting for maybe more of an opportunity. … I can understand it because Jake Fromm isn’t going anywhere. He feels like the clock is ticking and he wants to get going. He thinks he’s the equal of Trevor Lawrence, who is getting all the accolades now. It’s totally understandable, and it was foreseeable.”

Where Fields ends up next remains to be seen, but nearly every team in the country will be after him this offseason.
