High school players don’t usually sign with Alabama unless they have huge aspirations.

But Trey Sanders, the nation’s No. 1 running back recruit who joined the Crimson Tide on Wednesday, might be dreaming a little too big.

During his live announcement ceremony on ESPNU, Sanders said he plans on winning the Heisman Trophy as a freshman, which would be a tall task even for a player of his caliber.

First of all, a true freshman has never won the Heisman, so Sanders’ odds of doing so would be almost nonexistent if he gets on the field next year, which isn’t a guarantee as far as we know. His chances don’t improve much even if he takes a redshirt — only two players (Johnny Manziel in 2012 and Jameis Winston in 2013) have ever won the award as redshirt freshmen.

It’s also unlikely that Sanders would function as a feature back for the Crimson Tide, considering the way Nick Saban rotates his players and the talent already present on the roster.

To top it all off, this year’s Heisman runner-up by a narrow margin will play for Alabama next season, too. Sanders might get to share the backfield with Tua Tagovailoa, but winning the Heisman over him seems like an almost impossible task.

That being said, some Crimson Tide fans might like his confidence.
