Cam Newton and Will Grier already shared a connection well before Carolina decided to draft the West Virginia quarterback and Charlotte native in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft. Both players began their college careers at Florida and left prematurely, leaving many Gator fans to wonder what could have happened if they each stayed on and finished their collegiate careers in Gainesville.

Now, of course, the two quarterbacks are on the same team entering the 2019 season after Grier fell after being projected by some to be a first-round pick this time last year. While Newton is nowhere close to the end of his playing days, he’s coming off a season in which he completed a career-best 67.9 percent of his passes, some are naturally questioning whether the Panthers are envisioning a scenario where the Charlotte native one day takes over the starting role with Carolina.

That’s something Newton didn’t come out and say but he hinted at it when asked to share his reaction to the team’s selection of Grier. As far as the starting quarterback in Carolina is concerned, he’s focused on being a good teammate to the rest of the signal callers on the roster.

“A lot of people, you know, the natural, you would think I feel intimidated, you know what I’m saying? That’s not the case here,” Newton said. “Reached out to Will, actually seen Will play in high school with him being in Charlotte and I’m just excited.”
