Feleipe Franks may have his sights set on one day being drafted in the NFL but Major League Baseball just beat the football league to the punch.

Florida’s redshirt junior quarterback had his name called in the 31st round of the 2019 Major League Baseball Draft, with the 947th overall selection, by the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday. Franks does not play baseball for the Gators but he was a standout high school prospect in both football and baseball.

The Gator signal caller had his breakout season on the gridiron last year playing for Dan Mullen as he went from having a 9-8 touchdown to interception ratio as a freshman to a 24-6 ration as a sophomore. Franks also added seven rushing scores as a sophomore last season — he did not score a rushing touchdown in 2017.

It’s not totally unusual for baseball teams to select this off-the-radar prospects, Michael Vick was also drafted after not having played baseball in years, but this selection is interesting, nonetheless.

If football doesn’t work out for Franks at the NFL level, it has to be comforting to know another professional sport is eager to give him a shot.
