In Week 1, we got our first fiery Nick Saban sideline moment of the 2019 season.

The Alabama head coach argued with the officials after the Crimson Tide received a sideline warning for celebrating CB Trevon Diggs picked off a Duke pass, resulting in a flag for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Saban was asked about his outburst, which included some explicit language captured by the TV camera.

“Undisciplined,” Saban said after Alabama’s 42-3 win over Duke. “You know, one of the things that we wanted to establish here was discipline, and the coach did a poor job in his leadership of setting a good example for how you’re supposed to be disciplined.”

“But I guess my reaction was, you know, the kids are having fun,” Saban added. “So the guy intercepts the ball and everybody jumps up and down on the sidelines and we get a flag. So my reaction to that was, the kids are having fun.”

For all the laughs and tweets and gifs the outburst generated, Saban will score points with many football fans for being a “let the kids have some fun” advocate.

New rules implemented in the 2018 season allow the refs to penalize sideline behavior such as a head coach’s outburst. It’s the first time Saban has drawn the flag since the rule change.

“I deserved it,” Saban said. “I’m not making any excuses for it. It’s the first time it’s happened. I don’t remember the last time it happened, but it’s been a long time. But I’ll learn something from that, too.”
