Harvey Updyke will go down as one of the most hated figures in SEC football history. In 2011, the infamous Alabama fan poisoned the famous oak treed on Toomer’s Corner in Auburn stemming from the Crimson Tide’s loss to the Tigers in the 2010 Iron Bowl. After calling into “The Paul Finebaum Show” to confess, he was sentenced to just over 75 days in prison and ordered to pay $800,000 in restitution.

After he was found to have skipped out on a number of payments and failing to appear in court after being summoned for those non-payments, Updyke found himself back in the headlines.

On Friday, ahead of No. 2 Alabama’s huge battle against No. 1 LSU in Tuscaloosa, he called back into “The Paul Finebaum Show” to once again answer for his actions, saying that he didn’t mean to poison the trees.

“Paul, they’re only trees,” Updyke replied to some cheers from the Alabama fans attending the live taping of the show in Tuscaloosa. “I didn’t try to kill those crows that fly around. I didn’t try to kill LSU’s tiger.”

“Harvey, we’ve had this conversation privately, but we’re going to have it publically,” Finebaum responded. “You still don’t get it, do you?”

“It was supposed to be a joke,” Updyke replied. “I’m not as dumb as I look. I get it very much. I know exactly what’s going on.”

“You broke a lot of people’s hearts when you poisoned those trees. I don’t know that many Alabama fans, I don’t know frankly any Alabama fans that thought it was a good idea, either,” Finebaum responded.

Reaction, of course, came swiftly from social media in the wake of Updyke’s call, some criticizing Updyke’s comments and others taking issue with the reaction of Alabama fans themselves.
