Fans who follow recruiting often celebrate a prospect committing to their team, but until pen is put to paper and the fax is in, a commitment is just a verbal pledge. For Ole Miss basketball, the highest-rated basketball commit in program history has upgraded from verbal pledge to signee.

The official Twitter account for Kermit Davis’ squad was excited to share the news that guard Matthew Murrell is officially a Rebel as of Wednesday. The Memphis, Tennessee native is a high-4-star prospect out of the IMG Academy.

“Matthew has been a top priority of ours since we arrived at Ole Miss a year and a half ago,” Ole Miss head coach Kermit Davis said in a release. “He’s an outstanding talent, explosive athlete and excellent scorer at all three levels. On top of his fantastic character, Matthew is an exceptional student-athlete that has such a great support system around him with his mom Gladys and father Carl!”

Murrell’s signing means he’ll join Ole Miss for the 2020-21 campaign. Davis expects the former Whitehaven High School standout to have a successful season down in Bradenton, Florida.

“Matthew is poised to have a fantastic senior year at IMG, playing for Sean McAloon, in pursuit of their second consecutive national championship,” Davis said.

The announcement notes that while at Whitehaven, Murrell averaged 20.1 points per game as well as 4 rebounds per game and 3.2 assists per game, earning all-state, all-district and all-metro accolades.
