Alabama easily took care of business against FCS Western Carolina on Saturday, earning a lopsided 66-3 victory.

Many fans around the country continue to be upset that Alabama and some other SEC teams continue to use the second-to-last week of the regular season as a “Cupcake Week,” but FOX analyst Joel Klatt says that’s a misguided point of view.

Prior to Alabama’s game against Western Carolina, Klatt said it’s not Alabama’s job to make its schedule “fair” and “equitable” for other Power 5 schools:

“For Alabama, folks, this is why it’s so advantageous the way that they schedule in the SEC, and sometimes in the ACC, these FCS games late in the year,” Klatt said. “Western Carolina is a three-win FCS team. We all know that’s basically a third off week for Alabama, but here’s why that’s so important. They’re gonna have three starters out on the defensive line, Tua, Henry Ruggs … so they’re really banged up.

“You know what happens to other teams when they’re banged up? They’ve got to go and play, call it Illinois, bowl-eligible, they’ve got to play Colorado on the road … and all of a sudden you’re in really tight games on the road.”

Klatt even went on to say that there’s no reason for the Tide to change their scheduling practices. Big Ten, Big 12 and Pac-12 fans love to point to their 9-game conference schedules, but Klatt said it’s not Alabama’s fault those other conferences wanted the extra money a ninth conference game brings:

“Is it Alabama’s fault? No. Should they change? No, unless they’re forced to,” he said. “Alabama should not do anything with their schedule until they’re forced to do so. It’s not their job to make it comfortable for everybody else and equitable for everybody else in order to have a schedule advantageous to potentially go to the Playoff. … Just because the Big 12 and the Big Ten and the Pac-12 went out and hunted for money with the ninth conference game, that’s not Alabama’s fault.”

The Tide play UT-Martin on Nov. 14 next year, so expect this same discussion and anger from fans to pop back up at this time next year.
