The Gamecocks lost a commitment heading into the weekend as Atlanta area defensive back Demarko Williams publicly announced his decommitment from South Carolina on Friday.

Following this news, South Carolina’s 2021 recruiting class is currently down to just three pledges. With Williams no longer committed to South Carolina, the Gamecocks are down to just one defensive back commit in the class, which comes from Georgia native Marcellas Dial.

Williams originally committed to the Gamecocks back on Jan 21, 2020. The 5-foot-10, 165-pound defensive back for Westlake High School is rated as a three-star prospect by 247Sports Composite Rankings.

In his decommitment statement, Williams singled out two coaches — Will Muschamp and defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson — for his recruitment to South Carolina and didn’t appear to shut the door on a potential return to the Gamecocks’ 2021 class.

“After much thought and careful consideration with my family, I have decided to withdraw my commitment to the University of South Carolina. I want to thank Coach T-Rob and Coach Muschamp for their opportunity they’ve presented me. At this time, my recruitment is 100 percent open. As I progress through this recruiting process, I will have no further comment to any media about my decision. Thank you to everyone for respecting my decision.”

Williams recently shared that Florida State and Ole Miss have extended scholarship offers to him since his commitment to join South Carolina’s program.
