The New England Patriots are moving into an era without Tom Brady as their quarterback. Former Auburn star Jarrett Stidham is currently atop the Patriots’ QB depth chart, but the team could also explore outside options.

One of those outside options could be another former Auburn star — Cam Newton, who was recently released by the Carolina Panthers.

However, former Patriots GM Scott Pioli doesn’t think Newton would be a good fit in New England. He spoke with CBS Sports Radio host Zach Gelb this week about why coach Bill Belichick and Newton couldn’t coexist:

“The Patriots thing is interesting with Cam Newton because in my mind, I don’t see those 2 coexisting together,” Pioli said. “The personalities and beliefs of how the game should be played, it seems like oil and water. I just see them as being very different personalities and having very different approaches to the game.

“Bill believes in football more than entertainment. Cam believes football and entertainment are almost equal partners. And in this day and age it is, but Bill has the soul of a football man. I just couldn’t see that working out too well. And if I did, it would probably have to be for 1 season.”

Newton is still looking for a team for the 2020 season, so we’ll see if New England eventually signs him or if he ends up elsewhere.
