Ole Miss fans will reportedly have to wait a bit longer for the start of the Lane Kiffin era. But don’t worry, Rebel fans, this is good news.

Instead of playing in the season opener against Baylor as scheduled on Saturday, Sept. 5, Ole Miss will reportedly be kicking off the 2020 season on Sunday, Sept. 6, instead. This means Ole Miss will likely receive a national broadcast to start the Lane Kiffin era.

According to Chase Parham of Rivals, the Ole Miss-Baylor showdown to open the 2020 season has been moved to Sunday, Sept. 6. The game will remain in Houston’s NRG Stadium and won’t conflict with the Houston Texans’ schedule as the NFL season isn’t set to start until the following weekend.

At this time, Ole Miss has yet to confirm the season opener has been rescheduled.

Ole Miss and Baylor have only met one time, with the Bears holding the only victory in the series after winning 20-10 in Waco all the way back in the 1975 season. Baylor advanced to the Sugar Bowl last season, losing to Georgia 26-14 in the matchup.

After that game, Baylor’s head coach Matt Rhule left for the NFL. Former LSU defensive coordinator Dave Aranda is now Baylor’s head coach.

Kiffin has coached against Aranda dating back to his time running Alabama’s offense under Nick Saban.

If nothing else, the rescheduling of the Week 1 matchup continues to show that Lane Kiffin is helping raise the national profile of the Ole Miss program, as it seems unlikely the Rebels would have been featured during the Sunday slate of Week 1 games had they not hired the former FAU head coach.
