After not seeing the field during the 2019 NFL season, it appears former Auburn standout Sammie Coates has just taken the first step toward transitioning to the next phase of his football career.

Moving from the field to the sideline, Coates is set to begin a career as a high school assistant.

Coach Caffey of Jensen Beach High School announced on Thursday that Coates has joined the high school football program’s coaching staff. The high school program is located in Jensen Beach, Fla.

“Jensen Beach High School Football is excited to announce the newest member of our coaching staff Coach Sammie Coates!!! Coach Coates is a former All SEC WR from Auburn and 5 year NFL career with Steelers, Browns, Texans and Chiefs!! Welcome to Tha Birdcage,” Caffey posted on Twitter.

During his three years on the field on The Plains, Coates caught 82 passes for 1,757 yards and 13 touchdowns from 2012-2014 before being selected in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Playing at the game’s highest level from 2015-2018, Coates caught 29 passes for 528 yards and a pair of touchdowns during his professional career.
