Former Georgia running back Sony Michel will reportedly be sidelined for the start of his third preseason with the New England Patriots. According to ESPN’s Field Yates, Michel was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list ahead of the team’s first practices.

The news doesn’t come as a huge surprise as it was revealed in June that Michel underwent foot surgery in May. The surgery was described as “maintenance-based.” Yates’ report indicates Michel isn’t quite ready to participate in practice.

The good news for Michel is that he can come off the preseason PUP list and be able to play in the 2020 NFL regular season. Last season, he rushed for 912 yards and 7 touchdowns on 247 carries in the Patriots’ running back by committee offense.

The Patriots selected Michel with the No. 31 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.
