If you missed it, Jeremy Pruitt announced that the NCAA has denied Cade Mays’ waiver to play immediately for the Vols this season following the lineman’s offseason transfer from Georgia.

Tennessee is appealing the decision.

It’s unclear how often these appeals work but Tennessee’s athletic department had similar success last year with a basketball player, when the NCAA initially denied Uros Plavsic’s waiver to play immediately. The initial decision was appealed by Tennessee and Plavsic was able to hit the court for half the season.

The Vols will be hoping for a quicker resolution on Mays’ case but if the NCAA needs a push to grant the lineman’s waiver, the running joke is the junior should switch from the offensive line to the quarterback position.

It appears any and all quarterbacks that desire to gain immediate eligibility are granted their waivers by the NCAA. Just look at Justin Fields, Taulia Tagovailoa, JT Daniels, Tate Martell, etc.

With that in mind, Mays suggested he take over Jarrett Guarantano’s No. 2 jersey for a season.

The NCAA may just be dumb enough to fall for this one.
