When it comes to ongoing training camp competitions in Columbia, all eyes are focused on the game’s most important position as Colorado State graduate transfer Collin Hill and last season’s starter, Ryan Hilinski, are currently locked in a battle to start under center.

During his latest media availability on Wednesday, Will Muschamp was asked to share how the competition between those two signal-callers has progressed with his team now in its second week of training camp.

“They are getting even reps. One reps with the first group one day, the other one does it the next day,” Muschamp explained, referring Hill and Hilinski.

According to South Carolina’s coach, Hill has impressed many of his teammates with his toughness and he clearly will have the advantage of knowing Mike Bobo’s system better after following the coach from Colorado State to Columbia.

However, despite what Hill has going for him thus far in the competition, Muschamp said there is no real separation between the two passers so far. On Saturday, South Carolina is planning to scrimmage, which could give one of the players an advantage over the other.

“Not at this time,” Muschamp said. “I think Saturday will be good, get off the field and let them go out and administer the offense, run the offense, we’ll go from there.”

When asked for a timeline for making a decision, Muschamp declined to outline when a starter could be named.

“I will just say there will be at some point. Mike (Bobo) and I haven’t talked about that,” the coach offered up. “But again, with the situation we are going through, we need to be very fluid in what we are doing and everyone needs to be ready to go.”

One quarterback that South Carolina fans also need to consider, according to Muschamp, is true freshman Luke Doty.

Doty getting reps at receiver leading up to the start of training camp led to a ton of reaction from Gamecock fans but Muschamp isn’t ready to rule out the freshman playing under center this fall.

“As far as Luke is concerned, we never had any discussion about redshirting. He was going to play,” Muschamp added. “Mike has been extremely pleased with his progression at the quarterback position — as well as the receiver position.”

The idea of getting Doty reps are receiver is all about getting the best players on the field, but that doesn’t mean he won’t have his opportunity to player quarterback if he earns that opportunity during camp.

“Again, we’ve said it before, he’s one of the best athletes on the team and we need to find ways to get him on the field,” the coach added. “He’s got a great, competitive edge. He practices really hard, he runs 4.4 and he throws the ball extremely well.

“So y’all can keep talking about Wildcat and all that, that’s good. Let all the defensive coordinators think we are going to be in a Wildcock formation when he’s back there because he can throw the ball really well, too.”

For those thinking this was a two-man competition, Muschamp just added another arm to the battle.
