On Monday morning, Arkansas head coach Sam Pittman found out that he had tested positive for COVID-19. That puts his status for Saturday’s game against Florida in jeopardy and leaves defensive coordinator Barry Odom as the interim head coach.

Pittman remains asymptomatic, and while he was isolated at his home on Monday, he still held his weekly session with the media via Zoom. And although the Razorbacks are prepared to potentially be without their head coach this week, Pittman is holding out hope that he could pass the proper protocol to return to the sideline by Saturday.

“I’m embarrassed, I wish I wouldn’t have got the COVID,” Pittman told the media. “To be honest with you, I haven’t done anything different than what I’ve done ever since we were on Test 33 and the countdown was down to 12 before the regular season. I got a call this morning at 6:30 and said that I had tested positive, so I went up this morning to retest because I feel the same as I have all year.

“I was ready to get going with Florida, we’ll certainly continue that, that won’t be a problem with our coaching staff. I’m just disappointed. You get into coaching to coach, and I’m just disappointed I’m not going to have that opportunity to do that, assuming the test wasn’t incorrect and that I don’t get three negative tests in a row, which I’m hoping I do.”

Pittman is having an impressive first year at Arkansas, as he’s led the Razorbacks to a 3-3 start. This past Saturday, they beat Tennessee, 24-13, and they also own victories over Mississippi State and Ole Miss.

Whether or not Pittman coaches this week, Arkansas faces a tough test as it goes on the road to take on No. 6 Florida. The Razorbacks and Gators are set to kick off on Saturday at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN.
