For a program that has seen the success that Alabama has seen since Nick Saban took the reins, it’s probably a bit surprising that only 2 Crimson Tide players have won the Heisman Trophy: running backs Mark Ingram and Derrick Henry.

Perhaps that speaks more to the overall talent of the team that has kept it among the country’s elite, rather than simply of an individual—although both Henry and Ingram both proved they were more than worthy of their wins. But as good as Tua Tagovailoa was during a Heisman finalist season in 2018, Mac Jones’ performance could put him in line to become the third player in school history to win the award.

“If you said that Jalen Hurts with all his accomplishments didn’t win it, and Tua, for all his unbelievable play didn’t win it, then for Mac Jones to win it would be absolutely amazing,” Cecil Hurt, a longtime Tide beat writer for the Tuscaloosa News, said during an appearance during “The Paul Finebaum Show” on Monday.

Jones has certainly put himself squarely in the discussion. While his primary competition for the award appears to be Florida’s Kyle Trask and Ohio State’s Justin Fields, he’ll have an opportunity to make a further case for himself down the stretch, including during the Iron Bowl against Auburn on Saturday.
