After landing a scholarship offer from Mississippi State, former San Jose State standout receiver Tre Walker jumped at the opportunity to play in the Southeastern Conference after making the decision to leave the Spartan program.

Walker, a two-time First-Team All-Mountain West selection, announced his commitment to Mike Leach’s Mississippi State program on Friday but quickly had to reverse course later that evening.

According to Walker, there’s an odd league rule preventing incoming transfers with just one season to play, aside from graduate transfers.

“So it the SEC has a rule where you can’t transfer in with just one year of eligibility left,” Walker said to 247Sports. “Unfortunately, I will no longer be able to transfer there and I’m back on the market.

“I’m really not sure what the confusion was but I know the coaches tried everything they could. It’s disappointing because I was really excited to play there but it’s all a part of God’s plan for me. I haven’t heard from any other schools right now so hopefully things will get going once they hear I’m still on the market.”

This is tough news for both Walker and Mississippi State, who could have used a player that entered the program with a career 189 catches for 2,790 yards and 12 receiving touchdowns during his time with San Jose State.

Given the fact the NCAA is expected to open up all transfers, it may be time for the SEC to change its policy when it comes to transfers with one season of eligibility remaining so that players like Walker have the opportunity to compete in the nation’s best conference.
