Myles Brennan has experienced something few starting quarterbacks have during this era of the transfer portal in college football — he sat and waited for his number to be called.

That patience paid off for both Brennan and LSU last season as the junior signal-caller put up incredible numbers for the Tigers in just three games of action. During those three games, Brennan completed over 60 percent of his passes while racking up 1,112 passing yards with 11 touchdowns and just three interceptions.

Unfortunately, LSU’s defense didn’t do its part during those games and the team went 1-2 to open the season. Adding insult to injury, Brennan suffered a torn abdomen against Missouri and never saw the field again for the Tigers in 2020.

Now with spring practice set to begin in Baton Rouge with a heated quarterback competition featuring three quality options, Ed Orgeron recently shared a promising update when it comes to Brennan’s status.

“Yeah, he looks full go right now,” Orgeron told Bobby Hebert of FM 105.3 WWL radio. “We’re only going through walkthroughs right now, but he’s in the weight room, he’s doing everything that the team does. He’s throwing with the team after – when the coaches are not on the field. He looks like he’s full speed right now.”

While you could argue Brennan has shown enough to prove his value to LSU’s offense and regain his starting spot in the lineup, after the veteran signal-caller suffered his season-ending injury, true freshmen TJ Finley and Max Johnson stepped up and produced for the Tigers.

Finley was given the first opportunity at replacing Brennen and threw for 941 yards with five touchdowns and five interceptions (plus 34 rushing yards and a touchdown on the ground), leading LSU to a 2-3 record. Following Finley’s inconsistent debut, Orgeron then turned to Johnson to close out the season.

Johnson led LSU to a 2-0 close to the season and finished with 1,069 passing yards, eight touchdowns and just one interception to go along with 119 rushing yards and another two scores in six appearances.

While Johnson may appear to have the upper hand in the competition after leading LSU to upset wins over Florida and Ole Miss, you have to keep in mind Orgeron brought in a new offensive coordinator in Jake Peetz and a new passing game coordinator in DJ Mangas this offseason.

Taking all things into consideration, look for LSU to have one of the most contested quarterback competitions in the SEC this offseason with the battle heating up this spring in Baton Rouge.
