Somehow, Rutgers currently has a top 10 recruiting class in the country.

While that’s obviously very unlikely to hold up once more programs start stacking up commitments (Rutgers already has 11 total pledges in the class), Greg Schiano’s program just pulled off the biggest win of the current recruiting cycle by reaching into Kentucky and landing the state’s top prospect.

On Friday, four-star quarterback Gavin Wimsatt announced his commitment to Rutgers over Kentucky, Ole Miss, Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame and Oregon, among a host of other offers. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound Owensboro native is not only rated as the No. 1 prospect from the Bluegrass State, but he’s also the No. 3 dual-threat passer and a top 100 overall prospect in the 2022 recruiting cycle.

Wimsatt is now Rutgers’ highest-ranked prospect in the class.

If losing Wimsatt to a Big Ten doormat wasn’t bad enough, Kentucky’s quarterback play in recent seasons has held the program back from potentially taking a step up in the SEC ladder.

While some UK fans like to tout Terry Wilson’s 17-8 record as a starting quarterback, there’s a reason he left the program to close out his college career and the fact he landed at New Mexico doesn’t say much when it comes to the offers he received after entering the NCAA transfer portal.

Following Wimsatt’s commitment to Rutgers, Kentucky assistant Vince Marrow — who was recruiting the quarterback for the Wildcats — offered up the following comment on Twitter.

“BBN you win some and you lose some I wish every player I recruited nothing but the best. This will be one of the best classes Mark Stoops
will sign since we been here. Go Big Blue,” Marrow posted.

He may be on to something, as Kentucky currently has two of the state’s top four prospects already committed and the Wildcats are hoping to land four-star Indiana native Kiyaunta Goodwin (the No. 2 ranked prospect from the state), four-star Ohio native Aamil Wagner (the No. 5 ranked prospect from the state) as well as four-star receiver Dane Key, the No. 2 rated player from Kentucky.

Should the Wildcats land those players, Marrow will likely be proven accurate with his statement above.
