Despite Ja’Marr Chase opting out of the 2020 college football season, the Cincinnati Bengals decided to use their 1st-round draft pick on him, taking him 5th overall and reuniting him with college teammate Joe Burrow.

The Burrow-Chase connection was a lethal one at LSU as Chase totaled 1,780 yards and 20 touchdowns as a sophomore in 2019, his touchdown total setting an SEC record before DeVonta Smith hauled in 24 in 2020.

However, it’s been a tough preseason for Chase as drops began to become a major issue for him, something he’ll need to solve quickly.

“I’m not afraid to get better,” he said on Monday, according to ESPN. “That’s what I’m here for — to work, to get better, make the team better, make the organization better.”

So what was ultimately the root cause of the drops? Chase recalled a drop he had in the 3rd and final game of the preseason on a pass thrown to him from Burrow.

“If you look back at it, I jumped in the air when the ball got to me. That means my eyes weren’t concentrated on the ball,” he said. “I didn’t keep still. So that makes my eye adjustment for the ball move around.”
