Evan McPherson drew plenty of attention during the Super Bowl when he stayed on the field to watch the halftime show, which featured Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige and Eminem, among others.

The move evidently didn’t sit well with some in the Cincinnati Bengals organization.

“That’s a sore subject,” special teams coordinator Darrin Simmons said, via Jay Morrison of The Athletic. “That’s a real sore subject.”

The Cincinnati Bengals kicker was caught by NBC cameras watching the halftime show. Still, he built up plenty of equity during the season with fans and teammates. Also to be fair, McPherson’s move wasn’t a surprise, because he hinted at it before the Super Bowl.

“I’ll be super bummed if we can’t at least watch it on a TV or something,” McPherson told TMZ before the game. “I hope I get to watch it. I hope I get to be out there to experience it.”

His 42 combined field goals in 2021 set the team record, which beat the mark of 34 by Mike Nugent in 2011.

McPherson had 5 walk-off game-winners, including 2 in the playoffs as he became an even larger fan favorite and household name. McPherson’s 12 field goals from 50-plus yards beat the team’s previous single-season record of 3 and already has set the franchise’s career mark.
