Lane Kiffin was part of one of the most iconic moments in college football in 2021, as Tennessee fans pelted the field with trash during a loss to Ole Miss.

Among the things thrown were a mustard bottle and a golf ball that nearly hit Kiffin on the sidelines.

Naturally, this offseason, Kiffin has been asked to autograph many mustard bottles and golf balls. He discussed it during his appearance at SEC Media Days on Monday:

“I did sign a mustard bottle, that was the first guy to come up, which I think he had an Alabama shirt on, so I was a little confused there,” Kiffin said. “So yes, I’ve signed a lot of mustard bottles and golf balls, which normally I haven’t. So it’s been a unique offseason.”

After a brief pause, Kiffin decided he needed to elaborate on his memorable first pitch ahead of the Ole Miss-Tennessee baseball series, which he threw with a golf ball. Of course, Tennessee swept the Rebels in that series, but Ole Miss went on to win the College World Series, so all worked out in the end.

Kiffin joked that it was all part of his master plan:

“I’d like to say on the golf ball, which goes back to the first pitch which I threw out for the Tennessee game and we got swept by Tennessee and didn’t play well, and everybody thought it was my fault. I had a plan,” Kiffin said. “I wanted our guys to stay humble and not play very well and we’d go win the national championship in baseball. So I’d like to say that was the plan. So all the Tennessee fans that were all excited about sweeping us, there was a plan.”

Well, as long as there was a plan! Next year, though, the Rebels will probably be eager to hand Tennessee a loss or 2 and avoid another sweep.
