LSU seems intent on corralling the best defensive backs class in the SEC in 2016.

Five-star CB Saivion Smith committed to the Tigers on Tuesday just days after the team hosted three of the top defensive backs in the country.

Smith, a 6-foot-1, 175-pound senior-to-be at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., is rated as the best cornerback in the 2016 recruiting class and the No. 1 player in the state of Florida, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.

He chose LSU over Clemson, Florida State, Florida and Virginia Tech. If his rhetoric is to be trusted, he’s unlikely to flip before next February, as 247Sports reported him as saying he’s “100 percent committed.”

“They will start me out inside as a nickel back to get me on the field early,” Smith said, according to 247Sports. “It’s ‘DB U.’ My dad has a great relationship with Coach Raymond and I really loved it there on my visit.

“This lets me focus on my team. We want to win a (high school) national championship.”

Brandon Jones, Eric Monroe and Deontay Anderson, the top three safeties of the ’16 class, all visited LSU this weekend for Junior Day. The Tigers already have a commitment from Clifford Chattman, a three-star safety from the New Orleans area.

LSU also has five commitments from four-star offensive players in the 2016 class, so the Tigers are off to a good start in recruiting.

This is from the 247Sports story:

Smith’s commitment could become the cornerstone of one of the best defensive back classes in the entire country. LSU is also in pursuit of a handful of other elite cornerbacks, including names like Kristian Fulton and Andraez Williams in Louisiana and Trayvon Mullen, Chad Vaughn, Nigel Knott and John Broussard outside the state. At safety, prospects like Cameron Lewis, Shyheim Carter, Deontay Anderson, Eric Monroe and Joejuan Williams – all ranked as top-15 prospects at their position – are among the names highest on the Tigers.
