Now that spring practice is finished, let’s take a close look at the injury situation on every SEC East team, keeping in mind suspensions, transfers and players who have been kicked off the team recently.

FLORIDA GATORS

Major Injuries: OL Roderick Johnson (spinal stenosis)

Other Casualties: J.C. Jackson (indefinite suspension)

Johnson’s career-ending spinal condition discovered by doctors was a devastating piece of news, both for Florida and the young man.

The second-most important injury could be Antonio Morrison, who hurt his knee in the Gators’ bowl game. The team hasn’t released many details, but there are rumors that the injury to the All-SEC linebacker was devastating. Coach Jim McElwain recently indicated Morrison will miss time during fall camp.

Fellow linebacker Jarrad Davis (meniscus tear) reportedly is recovering well.

Other important players who missed time in spring practice, but should be ready to go in the fall: OL Trip Thurman (shoulder), TE Jake McGee (leg), WR Brandon Powell (foot) and DL Bryan Cox Jr. (hip).

Jackson, a versatile athlete playing at cornerback this spring, suspended due to alleged involvement in an armed robbery, may or may not remain with the team into the fall.

GEORGIA BULLDOGS

Major Injuries: None

Other Casualties: None

The Bulldogs didn’t have any major losses or huge injuries this spring.

Receiver Isaiah McKenzie and oft-injured running back Keith Marshall both endured hamstring injuries. Running back Sony Michel (shoulder) also missed the G-Day game, making for a pretty boring offense. Receiver Blake Tibbs also missed the game with a shoulder injury. All of them should play this fall.

Outside linebacker Leonard Floyd, a huge piece of the ’15 defense, missed the spring due to shoulder surgery, but should return to working out next month.

Swing tackle Kendall Baker missed the spring game as well after an airbag injured his eye in a car accident.

KENTUCKY WILDCATS

Major Injuries: QB Reese Phillips (Achilles)

Other Casualties: None

Phillips’ injury early in the spring helped to clarify the quarterback position, with Patrick Towles and Drew Barker competing for starter/backup designations.

Redshirt freshman outside linebacker Kobie Walker was in line for a big role before needing surgery on his ankle this spring. Fellow linebacker Jabari Johnson also missed time this spring with an injury, and sophomore wide receiver Alexander Montgomery also had surgery on his knee.

It’s unclear whether a pair of Nebraska transfers, inside linebacker Courtney Love and tight end Greg Hart, will be cleared by the NCAA to play for the Wildcats this season, but both missed some time this spring due to injuries. Hart finished the spring on crutches.

Left guard Zach West (shoulder), defensive tackle Regie Meant (shoulder) and cornerback Fred Tiller (shoulder) wore no-contact jerseys in the spring game.

Others limited at some point in the spring include receivers Dorian Baker (knee), Ryan Timmons (shoulder/ankle), Alexander Montgomery (knee) and Charles Walker (shoulder), running backs Jojo Kemp (illness) and Mikel Horton (ankle), defensive back Kendall Randolph and offensive tackle Josh Krok.

MISSOURI TIGERS

Major Injuries: RB Trevon Walters (ACL), S Tavon Ross (ACL)

Other Casualties: S Shaun Rupert, OL Jordan Williams and DT Evan Winston (all transfers)

The running back position is thin as Walters is targeting a September return, but can’t realistically be counted on for much in ’15 after tearing his ACL. Morgan Steward (hip) remains out following an injury Mizzou initially described as “day-to-day” last August, and the team hopes to get him back this summer.

Connor McGovern, out with a sprained knee, should be fine well before the start of fall practice, where he’ll transition to left tackle.

Tight end Sean Culkin (shoulder) and slot receiver Nate Brown (knee) missed most of spring practice, although they’ll be healthy by this summer.

Four players not expected to fill major roles — Paul Adams, Grant Jones, Jake Brents and Sam Bailey — all injured their labrums.

SOUTH CAROLINA GAMECOCKS

Major Injuries: LB Larenz Bryant (liver)

Other Casualties: LB Kaiwan Lewis, LB Marcquis Roberts, WR K.J. Brent and QB Brendan Nosovitch (all transferred)

Bryant sustained a lacerated liver during spring practice, a scary, painful-sounding injury. A projected starting outside (Sam) linebacker, Bryant should return to the team for fall practice, but may have taken a hit in that competition by missing part of spring ball, including the game.

Mike Matulis still is recovering from a torn ACL and has suffered injury issues throughout his career. Matulis missed all of spring practice, but could claim a starting left or right tackle spot in the fall. Sherrod Pittman, an incoming linebacker, also missed spring practice while recovering from an ACL injury he suffered in high school.

Offensive line was an issue in general — left tackle Mason Zandi (hamstring) missed most of spring practice, as did right tackle Brandon Shell (shoulder). Cody Waldrop (knee) and Malik Young (ankle) also missed time along the line.

Cedrick Cooper (high ankle sprain) and Gerald Dixon (leg contusion) are among the other notables to miss time in spring practice.

TENNESSEE VOLUNTEERS

(Semi-)Major Injuries: Corey Vereen (knee surgery), DB Rashaan Gaulden (hand surgery), WR Cody Blanc (fractured ribs)

Other Casualties: WR Von Pearson (indefinite suspension)

This is going to look worse than it is, as Tennessee should be well-healed by the fall.

The receiver position, hampered by injuries so often last season, continues to be an issue entering the summer. Pearson, the potential No. 1 target, faces sexual assault allegations that potentially could keep him off the team.

Marquez North (shoulder surgery) didn’t participate in contact drills, Pig Howard (bruised ribs) missed practice time and Jason Croom (knee surgery) also remained a fixture on the sidelines. Josh Smith (ankle) is not yet 100 percent recovered from an injury that held him out of last season. Blanc’s spring ended prematurely as well.

Running back Jalen Hurd (shoulder) didn’t participate in any contact drills this spring, and Alvin Kamara worked past a thigh bruise late.

Vereen returned briefly, then the Vols determined he needed knee surgery and he missed the rest of the spring. Gaulden’s productive spring ended with hand surgery that reportedly will cost him six weeks.

Some of the other players who missed part or all of spring practice include DE Derek Barnett, DT Danny O’Brien, DE Kyle Phillips, LB Darrin Kirkland Jr. and OL Chance Hall.

VANDERBILT COMMODORES

Major Injuries: None

Other Casualties: QB Patton Robinette (retired)

Vandy’s spring game ended so long ago it was practically part of the 2014 season. The Commodores also don’t attract widespread media attention. But as far as we can tell, there aren’t any serious injury concerns with Derek Mason’s roster entering the summer.

Robinette’s decision to give up football probably was the team’s biggest news of ’15. It looked like Vandy was prepared to hand him the keys to the offense after an exhaustive quarterback search that’s lingered pretty much since Mason took the job. Now the team must select another player, and the options aren’t appealing.
