Alabama’s coaching search is the talk of the college football world right now. The search might not last too long, according to a report.

An article co-authored by 247Sports reporters Mike Rodak, John Talty and Matt Zenitz states that the team was told on Wednesday that Alabama hoped to have a head coach in place in the next 72 hours. Saban worked Wednesday, participating in an SEC coaches call and interviewing potential assistants, right up until informing the team that he was retiring.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel was quick to produce a “projected target list” of candidates for the Alabama job. Thamel named Oregon’s Dan Lanning, Washington’s Kalen DeBoer, Clemson’s Dabo Swinney, Penn State’s James Franklin, Florida State’s Mike Norvell and Notre Dame’s Marcus Freeman.

Lanning was a graduate assistant on the Alabama 2015 staff and reunited with Kirby Smart at Georgia. Swinney is an Alabama alumnus, playing wide receiver from 1990-92. Swinney was also on Alabama staff from 1993-2000.

Plenty of other coaches, including those who went through Saban Coaching Rehab as Crimson Tide assistants, are being mentioned as potential candidates for the job. Saturday Down South’s Matt Hayes writes Lane Kiffin is the obvious choice to succeed Saban.

Alabama’s last coaching search took 38 days to bring Saban from Miami to Tuscaloosa. It sounds like Alabama AD Greg Byrne intends to move much quicker.

Byrne warned fans to not believe anything that doesn’t come directly from him. In the same statement, Byrne said Alabama’s ideal candidate “will be strong in recruiting and relationship building, player development, excel in Xs and Os and have the overall ability to lead this historic program.”
