Alabama’s quarterback competition is about to heat up.

The Crimson Tide are set to enter fall camp with 3 strong contenders to win the starting job: Tyler Buchner, Ty Simpson and Jalen Milroe.

Buchner is a recent addition as he transferred from Notre Dame earlier this offseason. He has familiarity with new Notre Dame offensive coordinator Tommy Rees and, for that reason, could have the inside track to the starting job.

ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg previewed some of the nation’s most intriguing quarterback battles in a piece published on Friday. Rittenberg predicted Buchner will eventually get the starting nod over Simpson and Milroe.

Here’s his analysis:

Prediction: Buchner. I could see Milroe getting the nod, but Buchner’s familiarity with Rees and his approach should give him the edge. Both players still need to show they can avoid interceptions — Buchner has eight on 118 career pass attempts, while Milroe was picked off three times on 53 attempts last season.

Issues with turnovers for Buchner and Milroe have been noted by one of Rittenberg’s colleagues. Greg McElroy predicted earlier this month that Simpson will end up winning the competition in fall camp.

Buchner won Notre Dame’s quarterback competition over Drew Pyne last August, but suffered a serious shoulder injury in Week 2. He returned for Notre Dame’s bowl-game victory over South Carolina and threw for 273 yards, 3 touchdowns and 3 interceptions.

Alabama will open the season against Middle Tennessee on Sept. 2.
