Sports fans may best know author James Andrew Miller for his history of ESPN book “Those Guys Have All the Fun: Inside the World of ESPN.” But his work extends well beyond that. He also famously wrote about the history of “Saturday Night Live” in “Live From New York: An Uncensored History Of Saturday Night Live.” Miller has recently turned to storytelling via podcast. His “Origins” podcast debuted with a deep look at the HBO show “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” Season 3’s focus is Alabama coach Nick Saban.

While Saban is known for occasionally granting all-access and/or behind-the-scenes looks at Alabama football to ESPN, Miller’s podcast attempts to take a look at the big picture of who Saban is and how he operates. For instance, “Origins” includes contributions from Lane Kiffin talking about his surprise exit from UA during the Crimson Tide’s Playoff run.

Miller sat down with AL.com’s Michael Casagrande to reflect on what he learned about Saban while researching and making “Origins,” reactions from listeners and other topics.

One of the more interesting items is Miller’s biggest takeaway “from the whole process.”

“I think it’s interesting understand how everything fits together. You might think that it’s all about physical training or weeks on the field. And you have Nick Saban, you have Scotty Cochran, you have Terry Saban, you have the whole — the nutritionist. So, I think the idea that a comprehensive holistic approach to the athletes including the classwork and getting them ready to graduate and be functioning adults.”
