Brandon Miller is going to have to win over his new team’s fanbase, it seems.

After the former Alabama guard was selected No. 2 overall in the 2023 NBA Draft on Thursday by the Charlotte Hornets, fans at a local taproom in Charlotte were captured booing the pick. One fan can be heard shouting “Scoot” just before NBA commissioner Adam Silver announces Miller’s selection.

With the No. 1 pick settled for months, the hottest debate in the field was whether Miller or G League guard Scoot Henderson made more sense for the Hornets. The debate isn’t likely to end anytime soon, either.

But Miller will have the chance to convert any detractors. He’s a prototypical 3-and-D wing that, on paper, pairs seamlessly alongside the flashy, playmaking LaMelo Ball. The 6-foot-9 Miller can shoot from the outside and has the potential to develop into an elite defender given his length.

In his lone season at Alabama, Miller became the first SEC player in league history to win the Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year, and Tournament MVP awards in the same season. He also finished the season No. 2 in Alabama program history for 3-pointers made. Miller averaged an SEC-leading 18.8 points a game to go with 8.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists.
