No. Alabama nearly suffered its first loss of the season and first since Nov. 30, 2019, as it held off Florida 31-29 in Gainesville on Saturday.

The Crimson Tide are considered the favorite to win a 2nd straight national championship — it would be Nick Saban’s 7th in Tuscaloosa and 8th overall — but showed plenty of vulnerability at the Swamp. Now, the scene shifts to their next game, one that won’t be easy by any stretch of the imagination: Matt Corral and No. 11 Ole Miss, led by Lane Kiffin.

Much more is on the line than Kiffin becoming the first former Saban assistant to beat his former boss. The Rebels can send a loud message that they belong in the College Football Playoff discussion.

And Sports Illustrated college football writer Pat Forde identified the Rebels as the Tide’s “top challenger” in the SEC West, spotlighting not just Corral but their running game as well.

“Keep in mind that Ole Miss’s 145 rushing attempts lead the SEC,” he wrote on Monday. “It can move the ball with balance and keep defenses guessing. Most important to the Rebels’ bid for renewed relevance is the improvement on defense. If that holds up, this is a dangerous team.”

We’ll see if this one resembles the 63-48 track meet Alabama won in Oxford a season ago. Kickoff from Bryant-Denny Stadium is at 3:30 p.m. ET on CBS.
