Nick Saban is making nearly $12 million a year now thanks to his new contract approved on Tuesday, but syndicated radio host Dan Patrick believes it’s still a bargain.

Patrick noted on Tuesday’s show that Saban his place in history is secure, and listed out several other top coaches with similar salaries, such as Southern Cal’s Lincoln Riley, LSU’s Brian Kelly and Georgia’s Kirby Smart.

“These are really good coaches,” Patrick said, “you could combine their resumes and they’re nowhere near Nick Saban. I don’t know if he’ll coach until 2029, but he’s getting paid.”

Paul Pabst, a producer of Patrick’s show, pointed out that the University of Alabama enrollment has spiked from Saban’s first season, which was around 22,000, to this season, when the Crimson Tide count 39,000 undergraduates, and the number out of state students have really gone up.

That’s how Patrick arrived at the opinion that “Saban might be the best bargain in sports right now.” That includes an NFL broadcaster like Tony Romo.

“Tony Romo makes $18 million a year. Who is more impactful? Tony Romo with CBS or Nick Saban, it’s not even close,” Patrick said. “Would Alabama continue to make a ton of money if Nick Saban weren’t there? Probably not. I guess you could say (Bill) Belichick because of the Super Bowls.”
