Jalen Hurts took many by surprise last weekend at Alabama’s Media Day event when he publicly aired his grievances with how the Alabama coaching staff mishandled the offseason quarterback competition.

While Hurts essentially called out the coaches, not any of his teammates — including Tua Tagovailoa, many have wondered whether there is any divide in the locker room following that event. For what it’s worth, Alabama offensive lineman Ross Pierschbacher shot that theory down during his Tuesday media availability but did reveal the team held a players-only meeting following Hurts’ comments.

During a recent appearance on Birmingham-based JOX 94.5 FM radio program 3 Man Front, former Alabama quarterback and current SEC Network analyst Greg McElroy shared his take on Hurts’ comments.

“It felt like — and I don’t know how you guys took it, but it felt like three months of frustration building up, and his first opportunity to address the media felt like he had a few things he wanted to get across,” McElroy said on the air.

“Now, I know that in today’s day and age, kids are more connected than ever before. … I get the sense that he was looking on social media and reading the press clippings and talking to people in his hometown, and that frustration boiled over the first opportunity he had to visit with the media. I can’t say I was surprised. I also am not one of those people that’s going to make a bigger deal out of this than it really is. Is it a good look? No, but it’s certainly not going to be a key determiner as to who wins the quarterback competition.”

McElroy was then asked if Alabama has locker room problems because of Hurts’ comments (knowing they had a players-only meeting:

“No,” McElroy said about Alabama having a locker room issue. “It’s day two. I think that having a players-only meeting more often than not isn’t a bad thing. … They’re often overblown, man.”

“I wouldn’t chalk it up as to there’s some fracturing going on or there’s a big issue in the locker room. The team is too talented. There’s too many good established players on this football team to allow it to get out of hand.”
