Eli Gold will be back in the booth this fall. The voice of Alabama football confirmed he will be calling Crimson Tide games this season after missing 2022.

Gold shared the exciting news with Tide 100.9’s Ryan Fowler on Friday afternoon.

“Yes, so I’m coming back,” Gold told Fowler.

To help get back in the groove of calling UA football, Gold shared that he will do a couple of “make-believe” broadcasts of Tide scrimmages next month.

“As a matter of fact, I’m going to be doing the two scrimmages,” Gold told Fowler. “Not on the air, but the two scrimmages that the team always has on the two Saturdays before the start of the regular season, so that will be August 19 and August 26, this year. We’re gonna go into the booth and just do a make-believe broadcast.”

Gold, 69, has dealt with multiple health issues in recent years, including shoulder replacement surgeries in 2020. He missed the entire 2022 football season due to an orthopedic issue that required significant weight loss and impacted his ability to walk.

In January, Gold announced that he was dealing with a treatable form of cancer. In April, he got to “ring the bell” as he completed treatment. He has been cancer-free since June.

Gold shared with Fowler that he has been getting physically ready for his return to the booth.

“I know I’m ready. I’m in good shape,” Gold said to Fowler. “Here’s a sentence you’ve rarely ever heard, I’ve been going to the gym three times a week, you know that’s something you’ve never heard Eli Gold say. I’ve been working, I’m in great shape.”

Gold has been calling Alabama games since 1988.
