Billy Napier may soon have some explaining to do.

The former Alabama assistant, now the head coach at Louisiana-Lafayette, announced this week he is “encouraging” all scholarship players a $50 minimum fee to gain access to the school’s alumni association. Walk-on players are not required to contribute this fee to remain on the team but scholarship players do have to pay up or apparently leave the team.

This news was first reported by Kevin Foote of The Advocate. According to Foote, Napier explained the idea behind charging his players this fee after introducing it to this team.

“That’s probably a little bit unheard of and a little bit unique, but I think this is a place where that would be appreciated,” Napier said according to The Advocate. “I think it’s part of the type of program that we want to have. We want our players to be educated and understand the benefits that come with being a student-athlete and that is not something that should be taken lightly — the effort and time and investment that the people that support athletes at UL have put in into this program.”

Before taking over at Louisiana-Lafayette, Napier served as Alabama’s receivers coach from 2013 until 2016.

It will be interesting to see if this policy catches on or even is enforceable if a player decides he doesn’t want to pay up down in Lafayette.
